The Bolshoi Theatre is both a theater dance and opera company. The word Bolshoi means "big" in Russian. The company was founded in 1776 by Piotr Urpusov and Michael Maddox. After three years it acquired the Petrovsky Theatre, where it remained until a fire destroyed the building in 1805. The building that now serves as headquarters was built in 1825 on the remains of the Theatre Petrovsky, designed by architect Osip Ivanovich Bovet. The theatre, after La Scala, is the largest in Europe. The Bolshoi Theater was an exclusive forum for Russian art. Its productions presented served as a counterweight to the strong Italian influence of the nineteenth century. Among the favorite composers was Mikhail Glinka. Today the whole theater season begins with an opera by Glinka.
