The Grand Sports Arena of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex in Moscow is the biggest sports stadium in Russia. Its field is used mainly for football games of Torpedo Moscow club and Spartak Moscow. It was built in 1956 in the area of open country along the Moscow River and opened as “Central Lenin Stadium” on 31 July 1956.  The first event was an historic football match in which the Soviet Union beat China with a score of one to zero in front of 102,000 spectators. The opening and closing ceremonies and athletic competitions of the 1980 Olympics were also held in the stadium. Between 1995 and 1997 it was renovated, changing its name to the present.  The quality of the stands was improved by reducing the number of seats and the stadium was covered completely. The Luzhniki Stadium was chosen by UEFA to host the 2008 UEFA Champions League Final won by Manchester United who beat Chelsea in the first All-English Champions League Final on May 21.
