>> Red Square

Red Square is the most beautiful and largest of Moscow. It occupies 73 000 m² and dates from 1434. Back then it was the main commercial center of Moscow. Its present name was given in 1662. In the square you can see several interesting monuments: the Lenin Mausoleum, the Historical Museum, the building of the old trade row, which now houses the Great State Almaacenes - GUM. To the right of the GUM is the St. Basil's Cathedral, built in 1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible by the two project architects Barma and Pòstnik. The tower of the Kremlin Salvador has always been its main entrance. The clock tower is considered the most accurate of Russia. Near this building is called "Lobnoe mesto" meaning eminence seen everywhere. Next to the Cathedral of St. Basil is the monument to two popular heroes of the struggle against Polish intervention in the early seventeenth century - Minin and Pozharsky.
