Russia's national museum was founded by Pavel Tretyakov. Currently, the Gallery has more than 100 thousand exhibits and has a collection unique in its significance and volume of icon paintings, as well as world-famous works of painting, sculpture and drawing by Russians and Soviets. The gallery's founder, Pavel Tretyakov, began collecting paintings in 1856. The museum hoped to create a public Russian national art collection accessible to all. In 1892 Tretyakov donated his gallery to the City of Moscow. The building itself was built in 1902, the facade is highly decorated. Arcades were recently added. Before the building is the monument to Tretyakov.
