The circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard (Boulevard of Flowers) – is one of the oldest Russian circuses. The circus was founded by an ex-rider and gymnast Albert Salamonskiy. When the circus opened on October 20, 1880, there were only 5 rows of seats and a special gallery where people stood to watch the show. Four years later, in 1889, the circus had added a few blocks of stone and built a pool in. In 1919 according to the order of Lenin, the Circus was nationalized and became the first state circus. One of the most popular clowns in the Soviet Union was Yuri Nikulin, who has performed in the circus since 1950. His fame also grew thanks to his comical roles in the cinema. In 1982 he was appointed director of the Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard. On the75th anniversary of the circus, in 1996, the circus was renamed “Nikulin Moscow Circus on Tesvetnoy Boulevard” in his honor. After his death in August 1997, the management of the circus was passed to his son, Maxim Nikulin.
