Mariinski theater, formerly known as the theater of Opera and Ballet of Kirov and as the National Academy of Opera and Ballet, is a historical theater of opera and ballet in St. Petersburg, in Russia. It’s house for the Mariinsky Ballet. Its general director is Valery Gergiev, who came after the retirement of Yuri Temirkanov, in 1988. It is named in honor of Maria Feodorovna, wife of Alexander II, Tsar of Russia. It was built between 1859 and 1860 by architect Albert Cavos, inspired by the work of Gottfried Semper, especially the Dresden Opera. During the Soviet era it was known as Kirov Theater in honor of Soviet politician Sergei Kirov. The Theatre returned to use its original name in 1992. This theatre has been the scene of major directors, musicians and dancers as Vatslav Nijinsky. With this stage are related the best achievements of Russian art of opera and ballet. The ballet company for several years was led by Marius Petipa, who created the choreography for over 60 ballets. In this scenario acted the leading artists of opera and ballet, including singers Fyodor Chaliapin and Leonid Sobinova, the ballerins Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, Matilda Kshesinskaya, Olga Spesivtseva, Galina Ulanova, Natalie Dudìnskaya, Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov and many others.
