Transport for Mexico is very important – the country is huge, distances are large.

In 1850, Mexico was the first of the countries of Latin America that began to build railways. But now, it is less used type of transport. It happened due to the privatization of all branches. Private investors have cancelled many routs and left only profitable tourist directions: road through Copper Canyon and «Tequila Express». Tariffs for trains are twice less than those for buses, however trains are slower.

The bus in Mexico is a prime kind of transportation.  It is the only possibility to reach remote mountain villages and other places away from the airports. There are three classes of busses: the second class – the most popular among the inhabitants and slow, the first class, which is a bit better and 10% more expensive,   the class “de lujo” goes on the most popular routes and is 30 % more expensive. It’s not problematic at all to get the bus tickets and the buses circulate punctually, at least on the main touristic routs.

Considering the large distances in Mexico, the second for popularity kind of transportation is a plane. There are more than 230 airports in the country.

Sea ferries transport is extended on peninsula Yucatan on short distances to several Islands. River transport is not developed because of absence of the navigable rivers.

Public transportation in the cities is developed decently. There is a very good underground in Mexico City, whereas in Guadalajara and Monterrey it is limited to two lines. In other cities buses and minibuses are used at most. The Mexican taxi is not very expensive transport, with the exception of very touristic places.

There are two categories of roads in Mexico: paid and toll free. The most of high-speed roads in the capital of Mexico and other important cities are toll roads. On free roads it is a lot of traffic, and consequently, the way is more extended. The network of highways has essentially extended over recent years. New roads go, in particular, along the northern coast of Pacific ocean, from Mexico City to Acapulco to Merida to Cancun.

There are widespread networks of car rental agencies in Mexico. To rent a car you need to have: a credit card, a driver license and a passport. The network of rental offices is not very developed, so the services when you could easily lease a car in one city and hand it over in another are rare here. The rented cars differ from local ones in the color of number plaques.  Admissible speed: in settlements – 40 km/h, on highway – 80 km/h, on high speed roads – 110 km/h.   There are a lot of fuel stations in the country.
