The Tourist year in Mexico consists of two parts: the high season – from Christmas and till Easter, the low season – from April till December.


All main tourist places are concentrated in the center of Mexico and in the South. To the North from Mexico City there are so-called silver cities (Guanajuato, Queretaro) which are well-known for colonial architecture. If you wish to catch the best fish ever or see a plenty of cactuses, you go the North of Mexico. The Pacific Ocean cost is less adapted for a bathing because of strong waves, but Acapulco and Baja California is famous for surfing. The Yucatan coast is well known for diving, snorkeling, deep-water fishing. The area of Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea is “swim” friendly and plus to this has amazing soft sand white beaches. All beaches in the country, according to the Mexican law are open to public.


The entrance fee to museums and archeological sites in Mexico are not very expensive, the majority of them on Sundays has a free entrance. The day off is usually on Monday.


One of the essential parts of tourism in the country is shopping. There are a lot of markets everywhere. The most items as artisanal work, local jewelry are cheap, but to bargain is welcome also. In large supermarkets you can find everything. 

 

 

Clothes

If you go to Mexico in the winter months, for vacations in the area of Yucatan, you will need summer light closes for the daytime and possible light sweater for cooler nights. For Mexico City and other cities of the centre of the country the season clothes are necessary (comparable with spring and autumn season in Central Europe). In the rest of the year the summer variant of clothes everywhere is required, but just in case, take pair of warm things. Not to forget about a bathing suit and a sun-protection cream.

 

 

Customs

Import of subjects for a private use is not the subject of customs declaration. You can import 1 item of electronic and home appliances along with declaring, souvenirs for no more than 300 US dollars, cigarettes up to 200 pieces, cigars up to 50, tobacco up to 250gr., alcohol up to 3 lt.


Import of psychotropic substances, medicines without the recipe, pornographic editions, plants, shanks and seeds of plants, flowers is forbidden. It is forbidden to import any articles of food. It is forbidden to import into the some states of Mexico products from tortoise shell and black corals.


Export of drugs, weapon, antiques, archaeological values, rare animals and birds, their skins and stuffed animals is forbidden.


The entrance airport fee exists, but mostly is in airfare already included. It is authorized to have up to 20 kg of luggage for one person, but there are some differences from airline to airline.

 

 

Money and the currency exchange

There is any restriction for import and export of currency. National currency is peso which consists from 100 centavos. In circulation there are banknotes of 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 peso, and coins of 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, 1 peso, and 50 centavos. The credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. The payments in US dollars are accepted also.

 

 

VAT

The VAT is included in the price, as a rule and makes 15 %. The only zone with 10% tax is Quintana Roo, the state on the Mexican Caribbean coast with it famous resorts as Cancun and Riviera Maya.

 

 

Phone, Internet, electricity

The public phones with coins are rare. But there are a lot of phones with telephone cards what are on sale practically everywhere. International calls are expensive.

There are a lot of Internet points, also most of hotels, cafes and restaurants, in the touristic places have Wi-Fi connection, free for customers.


The cell phone connection is supported by GPRS1900 technology.


Electricity network is under 110/220В, it is recommended to have an adapter for the North American style socket.

 

 

Photographing

Photos accessories are expensive in Mexico, it is better to bring with you. For photographing in museums it is necessary to pay the fee, using flash it is forbidden. There is also a fee to pay in the archeological sites for video cams.

 

 

Business hours

Official department: in first half of the day, till 2 p.m.
Sightseeing and archeological places: daily with 8 a.m.to 5 p.m.
Churches and museums: as a rule, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Banks: week-days  from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Supermarkets : from 7 a.m. up to 10 p.m.

 

 

Tip

For many Mexicans tip is a unique source of incomes. At the restaurants, as a rule, it is accepted to tip 10-15 % from the sum. To the bill boy or the cleaning personal in hotel is about 1 dollar.
 Taxi drivers do not expect tip.

 

 

Health and Hygiene

The special vaccination by the entrance of the country is not required. To avoid gastric diseases, it is necessary to use bottled water and have a common sense. The bottled and mineral water are on sale everywhere. In drugstores it is possible to buy all necessary medicaments cheaply.
